The 12 Minute Fitness Revolution is a program developed by Dr. Al Sears. Dr. Sears has 30 years of medical experience and currently operates an anti-aging clinic with 20,000 patients. His view on fitness differs from the majority of fitness experts, and he has the statistics to back up his claims. When it comes to exercise, he believes that quick and intense workout sessions are better for fat loss and longevity than traditional cardio and aerobic exercise. His book explains how most heart attacks and strokes are avoidable by strengthening your heart and lungs through short intense workouts. This article will explain the theory behind the 12 Minute Fitness Revolution, and compare Dr. Sears ideas to conventional fitness ideas.
Aerobic Exercise vs. Anaerobic Exercise:
As a personal trainer, one of the first things I do with new clients is show them a picture of an Olympic Sprinter and an Olympic Marathoner. My intention is to show them how different forms of exercise shape the body. I normally ask my clients who they would rather look like the sprinter or the marathoner. I have never had anyone point at the marathoner as their ideal or dream body shape; instead everyone wants the functional muscle tone, and shapely legs and butt of the sprinter.
The lesson is that you must choose exercises that will give you your dream body shape. I have so many women and men come to me telling me that they want a nice toned and firmed body like the Hollywood stars, yet when I ask them what kind of exercises they do, they often tell me that they walk or run x miles per day, and about the cardio equipment they use. They are often shocked when I tell them that they will never have the shapely body they dream about doing aerobic exercise.
On to the topic of this section: Aerobic Exercise vs. Anaerobic Exercise — Aerobic exercise is also called steady state exercise, this consists of taking a long walk, long distance running, and any activity that you slowly do over a significant amount of time. Anaerobic exercise is fast paced, intense, and quickly performed. It consists of activities such as sprinting, weightlifting, leading a fast break in basketball, and performing ANY exercise at a fast pace for a short amount of time.
What does this have to do with the 12 Minute Fitness Revolution? The 12 Minute Fitness Revolution is all about anaerobic exercise. Dr. Sears’s research has found that anaerobic exercise improves the health of the heart and lungs faster and more efficiently than aerobic exercise. It also raises the metabolism and keeps it high all day, whereas aerobic exercise only temporarily raises the metabolism. Dr. Sears says that you will lose more weight and at a faster rate using anaerobic exercise. He suggests old school calisthenics over traditional gym exercises, and his research and others have shown the validity of his beliefs.
How To Never Have A Heart Attack:
Dr. Sears says that traditional aerobics does very little to prevent a heart attack. Yes. It does help lower cholesterol levels, but aerobic exercise doesn’t build the heart to survive a sudden increase in heart rate or a sudden demand for more blood. Guess what kind of exercise prepares the heart for this type of sudden demand? Anaerobic exercise does! When you work out in a way that forces your heart to handle higher demands, and short bursts of all out power you end up with a much stronger heart.
The Pace 12 Minute Fitness Revolution builds a stronger heart through short, but intense anaerobic exercise. It will raise your metabolism for all day fat burning, and you will lose fat at a very fast rate.
